The people do not see bacteria water or viruses as causes of illness but regard sickness as one of a series of misfortunes with evil influences as the cause which needs to be propitiated. They use a passive and eating terminology to describe sickness rather than the more active and military terms of the West. Village healers are not paid in cash and are paid only after the cure takes place. Trainees who spent several months in a village were from Katmandu and represented the fields of child care nutrition and public health. Difficulties in approaching the indigenous healers were encountered as well as difficulties in securing information from them.
