The people do not see bacteria water or viruses as causes of illness but regard sickness as one of a series of misfortunes with evil influences as the cause which needs to be propitiated. They use a passive and eating terminology to describe sickness rather than the more active and military terms of the West. Village healers are not paid in cash and are paid only after the cure takes place. Trainees who spent several months in a village were from Katmandu and represented the fields of child care nutrition and public health. Difficulties in approaching the indigenous healers were encountered as well as difficulties in securing information from them. Needed are strategies for introducing modern methods according to the social and conceptual condition of the community approached. This would mean training the indigenous healers. When modern facilities are available the reputation and status of the old healers must be left intact so they can be pastoral aids and deal with social aspects still playing a valuable part in the community. All health workers including the old healers should be involved in a task group associated with the village panchayat to implement health projects take surveys of problems and needs channel resources and provide for training. In time they could also help formulate policy at higher levels.
