| Abstract: | Discusses the need for and benefits of psychophysical education, a system that is concerned with the correct use of the body. This includes posture (the relation to gravity), adequate self-image (including awareness of the whole body surface and the skeletal joints), and an effective knowledge of body mechanics grounded in personal experience of almost all movements of which the human body is capable. At age 46, in sound health, but overweight and rundown, the author began a 14-mo period of psychophysical education, blending the method presented by M. Feldenkrais (1972) and Avatara Yoga. In a phenomenological account of this experience, it is noted that coordination is reestablished, the body feels lighter, and movement becomes smooth and flowing with diminished expenditure of energy. |
