| Abstract: | Describes the repression of unwelcome bodily experiences as the intrapersonal dimension of unembodiment. It is subjectively manifested as a "hole in one's experience of being" and is objectively shown through a person's characteristic bodily posture, gait, and style of movement, which profoundly affect autonomic functioning. Persons who have repressed their own sense of vitality can also inhibit the vitality of others. The "unembodied way of being is not peculiar to psychiatric cases, but has rather become the norm, a kind of normalized madness." It is now possible to record and describe somatic disclosure patterns, with the help of techniques from physiology, kinesiology, and ethology. Conventional socialization, which results in unembodiment in varying degrees, could profit from restoration of somatic perception, through the use of Gestalt therapy, Hatha Yoga, Rolfing, and other techniques that will be developed.
