| Abstract: | Ancient Yogic treatises which contain descriptions of human neurology which have been misunderstood by modern scientists are discussed. Three verses of Sat-cakra Nirupana were translated and found to correctly portray the following: the morphology of the central neural axis, location of the ventricles in the brain, presence of cerebro-spinal fluid and the source of its secretion; the salient histological features of the neural axis, i.e., a horned grey column within a white column, the central canal and the spider-web like network of interneuronal communication; and the separate identity of the autonomic system and its communication with the spinal cord. Yogic anatomy was found to be highly advanced and to conform to modern scientific knowledge. It should not be called mystical without being studied in depth and with the right perspective. Yogic anatomy antedates the classical Greek schools and should be accorded its proper place in medical history. |
