| Abstract: | One hundred and fifty six healthy participants were drawn from a larger, sample of eight hundred persons who were attending a one week yoga I camp. Somatic indicators of stress based on a subsection of the Symptom checklist-90-Revised were assessed at the beginning (Day 1) and I end (Day 7) of the camp. The volunteers were also asked to select their first choice of a stress coping strategy from among six choices, given to them on Day 1. Based on their choice of a coping strategy the participants were sub-categorized as those who used (i) spiritual and philosophical, (ii) interpersonal, or (iii) denial coping strategies. All the participants showed a decrease in somatization of stress after yoga. However the sub-category who used philosophical-spiritual coping strategies based on their philosophical inclinations (i.e., those who were more likely to pray, meditate or listen to a spiritual discourse, or who were inclined to visit a holy place or carry out 'holy' rituals) showed the most reduction in somatization of stress after yoga.
