Abstract: Comments on an article by R. V. Behere et al. (see record 2011-00933-009). The authors set up a clinical trial study to demonstrate the effect of yoga as an add-on treatment on emotion recognition deficits, psychopathology and socio-occupational functioning in antipsychotic-stabilized patients with schizophrenia. The authors conclude that 'yoga therapy as an add-on treatment improves positive and negative symptoms, and emotion recognition abilities in antipsychotic-stabilized patients with schizophrenia, which in turn might improve their socio-occupational functioning'. Although this study represents an important and relevant addition to the literature on the subject, some points need to be clarified. For example, the authors could present the hypothesized causal chain (theory of change mechanisms) of the yoga as an add-on treatment on emotion recognition deficits in patients with schizophrenia. It would be helpful if they could describe how the new treatment differs from and may improve upon available treatments. Additional points needing clarification are listed.
