| Abstract: | Ayurveda is one of the oldest and most widely distributed ethnomedical concepts. Ayurveda is Sanskrit and means worldly wisdom or science of life. It is a traditional Indian healing culture which is thought to have been practiced for as long as 3,000-5,000 years. The aim of Ayurvedic therapy is to maintain and restore a harmonious equilibrium which is controlled by the three "doshas" (energies of life),"vata" (wind, air, ether),"pitta" (fire and water, choler) and "kapha" (earth and water, phlegm). Ayurvedic treatment applications have brought evidence of effectiveness in non-oncological studies. In the area of oncology therapeutic agents could be identified which showed effectiveness in in vitro and animal experimental studies. Clinical studies with sufficient validity have not yet been carried out. It is not advisable to attempt self-medication with Ayurvedic preparations as many are contaminated with heavy metals. Ayurvedic nutrition and Yoga exercises can be implemented in tumor patients when no contra-indications are present. |
