Abstract: This article focuses on Athma Shakti Vidyalaya (ASV) which is the first therapeutic community in India. ASV was founded by Jacqui Schiff and Fr Hank Nunn in 1979. Starting off with seven patients, the community now has thirty-three kids, well over the optimum number. The use of Transactional Analysis (TA) as a theoretical framework, and a tool to work with severely psychotic people, is challenging and innovative. Though TA is still the backbone of the community, aspects of other psychotherapies such as cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), gestalt, reality therapy, neurolinguistic programming (NLP), yoga and art have been integrated into the treatment process. Therefore, every effort or piece of therapy is placed in the context of a parent-child relationship, attachment being the guiding principle to recovery. A sense of being at home and growing up is created, giving ample opportunity and experience of being accepted and at the same time becoming aware of self and what it means to take charge of one's life. Negative experiences from the present and past are treated with equal importance as positive experiences, contributing to both change and learning.
