Abstract: Reviews the book, "Standing in the fire: Leading high-heat meetings with clarity, calm, and courage" by Larry Dressler (see record 2010-05823-000). Dressler’s work represents an implicit theory of group dynamics that places a heavy emphasis on both the affective state of the group—which he refers to as fire—and on the role of the facilitator. His focus is not, however, on the group. Rather, he emphasizes the role of the individual responsible for convening or facilitating the meeting. The tone and format of the text do not, however, present as a scholarly source. It is one part yoga, one part management, and one part psychology, among other things. In that, it may appeal to individuals seeking guidance in finding personal insights that will guide them in group situations. It may be a valuable resource for individuals seeking guidance in applying psychological theories and mind–body practices to improve their effectiveness in working with groups.
