Abstract: (from the book) This essay will explore dominant Hindu attitudes toward nonhuman animals as revealed in major Sanskrit texts of classical Hinduism, such as the Hindu law books (dharmaśāstras), the epics, the Purānas, and the literature of Yoga and Vedānta, as well as in other sources. It will be shown that, from the point of view of contemporary ecological and animal-rights paradigms, the Hindu material is ambivalent, particularly in terms of its notions of hierarchy.
