| Abstract: | This special issue of Journal of Offender Rehabilitation entitled "The Transcendental Meditation Program in Criminal Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention" offers a profound and holistic approach to solving the problem of crime. It addresses the epidemic of stress and describes solutions based on restoration of natural law in the life of the individual and society. This highly practical knowledge of living in accord with natural law--the same organizing intelligence that governs the universe--has been revived from the ancient Vedic tradition of India and reformulated into a systematic, scientific framework by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. This issue describes an approach from within the individual, an approach that allows the individual not only to automatically achieve the physiological and behavioral transformations necessary to produce law-abiding behavior but also to rediscover the inner Self as a silent, peaceful state of Being--a transcendental field of consciousness underlying individuality. The programs presented in this special issue offer an effective complement--or a comprehensive alternative--to conventional treatment approaches for crime prevention and rehabilitation.
