Abstract: (from the chapter) This reprinted article originally appeared in (Journal of Indian Psychology, 1978, 1(2), 160–175). (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1981-07136-001.) Discusses the psychological processes believed to be involved in Patanjali Yoga and reports results of experiments conducted to determine whether meditation would help people achieve better scores in laboratory tests designed to measure ESP. 59 Ss (aged 18–69 yrs) with various degrees of proficiency in yoga and meditation were administered forced-choice and free-response ESP tests just before they began meditation and again after they had meditated for at least 30 min. Results show that Ss obtained significantly better ESP scores after they meditated than before. This was true in forced-choice tests that involved blind matching of 50 ESP cards against 5 concealed key cards, as well as in free-response tests in which Ss attempted to guess a picture enclosed in a sealed opaque envelope.
