Abstract: Examined the effect of yoga and yogic practices and attitudes on depression and anxiety in 25 22-70 yr old patients suffering from gastrointestinal disorders. The patients lived in an ashram and lived the yogic lifestyle and ate yogic food for 15 days. Results of measures administered before and after the yoga practice are described as suggesting that levels of depression and anxiety were positively affected. It is concluded that although the yogic practices were aimed at reducing gastrointestinal problems, they had considerable effects on the levels of depression and anxiety as well. It is concluded that the effects of yogic practices are holistic. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2002 APA, all rights reserved)
