Abstract: Although there is a large body of literature pertaining to the interface between specific psychoanalytic-concepts and the practice of Vipassana Meditation. By exploring the meaning and significance of countertransference phenomena within the domain of psychoanalytic practice, a bridge can be formed between these experiences and the core principles inherent in Buddhist Insight Meditation. My study is an attempt to both increase and broaden the connections between the therapist's countertransference and the art of Vipassana Meditation. An historical overview of countertransference theory and Buddhist thought provides the backdrop for the intersection of these two paths. The clinical implications for the psychodynamically-oriented psychotherapist who practices Vipassana Meditation are brought to light through the use of a clinical vignette. Specific aspects of the therapist's subjective and objective state while experiencing countertransference will be addressed, including his ability to tolerate these states, his capacity to make meaning of them, and approaches to broaden their use within the therapeutic relationship. The literature seems to support the notion that the ongoing practice of Vipassana Meditation can enhance a psychotherapists ability to simultaneously engage with his countertransference thoughts and feelings and put them to use in the consulting room. Future innovations in clinical theory and technique, coupled with the self-reports of clinicians who meditate, will hopefully strengthen the connection between Eastern and Western thought. Suggestions for future research are discussed as well as their possible implications for clinical practice. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
