| Abstract: | (from the book) This chapter offers a theoretical perspective on the treatment of stress disorders by proposing a visuo-cognitive affect shift model derived from examining commonalities in eight therapies. Specifically, the therapies are eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, autogenic neutralization, a Buddhist practice from Tibet of 100,000 prostrations, a phenomenon from Indian religious traditions—the kundalini, EEG biofeedback, abreaction in psychoanalysis, neurolinguistic programming, and anxiety management training. All these therapies proceed in a sequential pattern of visualization and imagery of memories in relaxation, a repetitive meditative aspect, cognitive working of material, emotional catharsis with a numbing, neutralization, desensitization, moving from negative to positive emotions, and positive action. After emotional catharsis there is a shift from previously negative emotions to their more positive counterparts, and from this there ensues a final phase of behavioural mastery.
