Abstract: This study analyzed Hindi proverbs to understand the notion of intelligence prevalent in the vernacular or folk tradition in north India. After scanning 4 volumes containing proverbs in Hindi language, 393 proverbs having a bearing on intelligence were collected and content analyzed. The analysis revealed that intelligence is characterized more as a valued procedural potentiality. It has 4 aspects: social competence, reasoning and problem solving, personality and motivation and communication skill. About half of the proverbs stressed the social competence of the individual, particularly one's sensitivity to the context and practical thinking. An intelligent person has the ability to draw inferences and learn from past experiences. Hardwork and willingness to learn feature among the other characteristic behaviors of an intelligent person. Results have implications for understanding the cultural construction of intelligence. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2002 APA, all rights reserved)
