| Abstract: | This paper analyzes some of the salient features of the process of knowing as developed in the indigenous thought of India. After presenting a brief account of the limitations of the prevailing Western views of scientific knowledge, an attempt is made to bring into focus the Indian notions of mind, consciousness, attitude toward knowledge, means of knowledge and modes of spiritual realization. It is observed that the Indian view has evolved in the context of 2 levels of reality, i.e., empirical and transcendental.
