Abstract: An instrument, the Vedic Personality Inventory (VPI), was devised to assess the validity of the Vedic concept of the 3 gunas, or modes of nature. The sample, collected in a mid-sized city in the US, consisted of 247 Ss (aged 18-64 yrs), who completed the VPI, consisting of 90 Likert scale questions, as well as 2 shorter inventories included for measurement of construct validity, and several demographic questions. Statistical analyses show good evidence for reliability of the instrument, as all 3 sub-scales have alphas above .86. Also, there is preliminary evidence for construct validity, as 3 measures of convergent validity and one measure of discriminant validity correspond with Vedic theory. Ten of the original items were removed, based on factor analysis, leaving the present form of the scale with 80 items. Limitations of the study were small sample size and incomplete differentiation of constructs. Potential for application in vocational counseling and other fields is discussed, and suggestions for further research and scale refinement are given.
