Abstract: The intellectual tradition of India includes many psychological concepts, theories, and techniques that parallel, contrast, contradict, or complement Western ideas and theories. This paper discusses Indian and Western conceptions of the nature and states of consciousness; the concepts of self, identity, and self-actualization and self-realization; the nature of human suffering and ways of alleviating it; the concept of karma and the cycle of action and its consequences; the search for lasting satisfaction; the concept of samskara and the theory of behavior genetics; psychological implications of the ideas of karma and karma yoga; issues in combining modern research methodology with traditional theories; indigenous concepts and modern psychology; and the compatibility and possible integration of Indian and Western approaches.
