Abstract: Describes a sequence of deterministic mental and physiological processes, including sense impressions, percepts/images, cognitive and affective meaning, and mental or physical action. The notion of affective meaning is analyzed and discussed, emphasizing that this meaning is related to motivation, which is analagous to potential energy in the natural sciences. Thus, a thermodynamic energy model is tentatively applied to study certain aspects of affective meaning. Possible examples of the structure effect in practice are described, and a principal method is suggested to quantify and measure affective meaning. In this way the thermodynamic model may be experimentally tested. The link between affective meaning and initial motivation points to hierarchy of affective meaning originating from fundamental needs and instincts. Abstract nonsense figures may be part of the hierarchy of affective meaning and related to a fundamental need for structure. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2002 APA, all rights reserved)
