| Abstract: | Argues for a theoretical orientation in the study of creativity. Psychologists who persisted with an individual differences approach in the domain of intelligence have not been successful in their attempts to understand the origin and mechanics of intelligence. On the other hand, theory-laden approaches to the study of cognition, as exemplified in the works of Piaget (1961), H. Gardner (1987), and J. W. Brown (1977), have yielded insights into the origin and mechanisms of both intelligence and creativity. Current trends in such approaches are briefly noted, and empirical studies giving support to them are reviewed. It is suggested that recent findings in cognitive psychology and neuropsychology, including findings concerning sex hormones, may yield insights into the nature of creative process and the creative personality.
