Abstract: Suggests that the Indian tradition is characterized by a holistic approach to human phenomena. Behavior is interpreted in terms of a totality of individual lifestyles and total body-mind relationship. Philosophically, the body-mind level of analysis is treated as less significant than analysis at a still higher transpersonal level of self, atman or soul, which in turn is equated with Brahman, the ultimate reality. Stress in the modern sense is not easily found in the traditional texts, though there are extensive treatments of the problems of misery and suffering. The body-mind relationship, characteristic of modern stress studies, is emphasized in the Ayurvedic (Indian) system of medicine. There are some parallels in ancient Indian traditional thought and modern Western psychological literature. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2002 APA, all rights reserved)
