| Abstract: | Presents the case of a female architecture student whose symptoms of acne, hallucinations, and systematized religious thought (in the form of meditation and yoga) were complementary manifestations of a narcissistic defense, characterized by a turning inward of aggressive impulses toward the psychological and/or physical self. The defensive nature of all 3 clinical presentations is illustrated. The defense is viewed as an avoidance of the S's anger toward her mother. The use of the primitive defenses by the S's immature ego to protect itself from internal and external stimulation is described. The S's eventual decision to terminate treatment is evaluated in terms of the adaptive value of her defensive measures.
