| Abstract: | Suggests that there is a growing concern in India about the inappropriateness of applying Western models that are relevant to individualistic, verbal, and middle-class Whites to Indians who are passive-recipient, dependent, nonverbal, and living in an authoritarian culture. Consequently, some psychologists are of the view that more directive therapeutic techniques are better suited to the Indian cultural context. The present paper attempts to re-evaluate this point of view. A modified and a more active role for the counselor is envisaged to suit the Indian cultural context, with human values serving as an anchor for counseling interactions.
