Abstract: Discusses traditional treatment strategies for anorexia nervosa (AN) and recommends an individualized, contractual-coping approach (CCA) that emphasizes the input of an occupational therapist to be used in conjunction with the traditional models. Traditional strategies discussed include the medical model and the behavioral, family therapy, and psychoanalytic approaches. It is argued that the CCA can retain essential elements of these models while focusing on the patient's current individual needs. The CCA involves the negotiation of a contract between the patient and the person responsible for psychotherapy. The coping aspect of the approach involves the teaching of coping strategies for use in high-risk situations. Occupational therapy activities that are suggested as effective for CCA include yoga, cooking assessment and practice, art as therapy, assertiveness training, group discussion, and craft activity. It is argued that the occupational therapist can and must play a vital role in the management of AN. (9 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
