| Abstract: | This paper, presented at the 5th International Conference of the International Association of Cross-Cultural Psychology held in December 1980 in Bhubaneshwar, India, discusses how Eastern and Western approaches to psychology can be integrated. The 2 approaches are compared in relation to their content, aim or objective, and method. It is concluded that the sociocultural framework of the Western perspective in psychology is largely materialistic and rooted in various kinds of dichotomies that have led to the dominance of behavioristic approaches and the modeling of psychology after the natural sciences. It is suggested that the 2 approaches can be integrated by recognizing their respective utilities and regarding them as complementary to one another in the endeavor toward advancing knowledge.
