| Abstract: | The psychology of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi provides a comprehensive theory of adult development to higher states of consciousness, based on the Vedic tradition. It describes 7 major states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, deep sleep, transcendental or pure consciousness, cosmic consciousness, refined cosmic consciousness, and unity consciousness. Development of the latter 3 states is based on a development of mind and body that spontaneously occurs through regular experience of transcendental consciousness. In relation to other theories of adult development, the development of the higher states of consciousness may be conceptualized as extending development by establishing pure consciousness as a new level of cognitive structure beyond the levels of action (sensorimotor competencies) and thought (mental operations and representational processes).
