Abstract: Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(5), 356-358. Reviews the books, Meditational Therapy edited by Swami Ajaya (see record 1978-10261-000); Science Studies Yoga: A Review of Physiological Data by James Funderburk (see record 1978-02608-000); and The TM Technique: A Skeptic's Guide to the TM Program by Peter Russell (1977). The common purpose of these three books is to draw attention to the growing body of scientific data on yoga exercises and meditation. Each book, however, takes a very different approach. In the first book the authors support the idea that meditation techniques in combination with yoga exercises and biofeedback can effectively be used as adjuncts to conventional psychiatric therapies. The purpose of the second book is to objectively summarize in some detail the physiological data on both hatha yoga exercises and meditation. In the third book the author presents many intelligent speculations from a variety of sources about the role of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique in the fields of psychology, philosophy, and physics.
