Abstract: A brief reference is made to some contemporary trends in psychology to provide a background for a better understanding of Indian ideas about the field. Attempt has been made to explain the Indian approach with the help of the Upanishads (texts from the Vedas), and evidence is cited suggesting that problems discussed in these ancient texts fall within the scope of psychology. Atman, the main Upanishadic explanatory principle, is examined and shown to signify what may be called consciousness for itself, without reference to any content of consciousness, yet serving as the inner controller of all psychosomatic functions. The psychic apparatus as implied in the Upanishads and later elaborated by Patanjali is discussed. (59 ref)
